Chevrolet Silverado 1999-2006

The first generation Silverado marks a whole new era for the acclaimed pickup series. Chevy previously sold the GMT400 C/K trucks, but they eventually dropped the Silverado series. With this in mind, the first generation Silverado was praised for its toughness and reputation for durability. But are they reliable?

The 1999 Silverado debut model was an improvement over the older C/K trucks in every way. Many 1999 Silverado owners praised the truck, as shown inEdmunds. They claimed their 1999 truck has clocked up over 170,000 miles, which is really impressive for an older model. On CarComplaints, the 1999 Silverado has garnered over 2,000 complaints and 17 recalls.

Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup had some serious problems. According to CarComplaints, the 2000-2006 Silverado models are all "boilers" with a variety of issues such as engine knocking noise, excessive oil consumption, transmission issues, and many others.

Overall, the first generation Silverado was a success for Chevy, but keep in mind that these are older models with their share of problems.

Chevrolet Silverado 2007-2013

The second generation of the Silverado pickup truck brought several improvements, such as more powerful and efficient engines, a more inviting cabin, and better braking and handling.

For this generation we recommend model year 2007. According to Consumer Reports it isChevrolet Silverado 1500 2007It has a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 and an owner satisfaction rating of 3.0 out of 5.0. Owners have praised the 2007 Silverado for its refined, very quiet ride and comfortable seats, making it an ideal long-haul truck.

Then the 2008 Silverado was another Chevy winner too. O2008 SilveradoReceived the "Pretty Good" stamp from CarComplaints with just over 400 NHTSA complaints and only two recalls. His biggest problem was excessive oil consumption, but the rest were minor complaints. Even with the Z71 transmission that gave so many people so much trouble, the 2008 Silverado remains a solid choice for a used truck.

Finally, the 2012 model is another excellent choice for anyone wondering what year the Silverado is the most reliable. It's powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine with 315 hp mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While the 2012 Silverado only gets 14 mpg on fuel economy, it has excellent towing ability. Consumer reports gave this truck a 3.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating.

Chevrolet Silverado 2014-2018

The third-generation Silverado built on the resounding success of previous generations. Chevy focused on transforming its popular line of trucks into a more comfortable and safer machine. At this point, Chevy was refining and updating the Silverado truck, and it became the preferred choice for many truck enthusiasts.

Unfortunately, the third generation Silverado failed to impress in terms of reliability. For example, this generation's debut model, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, received a 2.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating from Consumer Reports. On CarComplaints, this truck has received over 2,000 NHTSA complaints and an impressive 20 recalls. It had a wide range of issues, from broken air conditioners to transmission issues.

Meanwhile, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 received fewer complaints than the 2014 model year, but it was still the subject of a whopping 23 recalls. Consumer Reports also gave the 2015 Silverado a dismal 1.0 out of 5.0. Which year is Silverado the most reliable? Well, it's certainly not the 2015 model year.

Unfortunately, the rest of the third-generation Silverado didn't fare well in terms of long-term reliability. However, that doesn't mean that this generation won't last; It's just that you're more likely to have serious reliability issues.

Chevy had to completely redesign the Silverado for its current latest generation in order to keep up with its competitors. Silverado features improved power delivery and a smoother ride quality for this generation. It also had a slight fuel economy improvement (1mpg) for the 5.3-liter V8 engine.

Fortunately, the current Silverado generation has improved in terms of reliability. According to CarComplaints, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has had more than 700 complaints and 10 recalls. His three main problems were broken brakes, lifter problems and he tends to fall when shifting gears. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports deemed the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado unreliable and gave it a poor 1.0 out of 5.0 rating for predicted reliability.
